eXtensible Neuroimaging Archive Toolkit (XNAT)

The eXtensible Neuroimaging Archive Toolkit (XNAT) provides a web-based data management for diverse data sets. XML is used within XNAT both to define data types and to automatically generate the data store. Users of XNAT can employ pre-defined standard schemas or extend the schemas for custom deployment. The XML schema document defines relationships between different data types, thus enabling complex queries. XNAT provides the user with visualization tools, methods for data validation and integrity-checking, the ability to export data into a number of convenient formats and security features. XNAT can be downloaded from here.

XNAT version 1.3 is the current version with a major upgrade expected before the end of 2007. Version 1.3 includes significant improvements and new features, including web services, treamlined installation scripts, DICOM support, pipeline processing, and image downloading.

An XNAT Sandbox is also available and located here. This is a publicly available instance of XNAT loaded with fabricated data that allows interested groups to explore XNAT’s capabilities without risk of compromising ‘live’ data. A Google discussion group is also available for user discussion here.
